Recycling for Earth’s Survival

by Joshua Rebustillo

Have you done your part in helping the Earth survive?  There are many ways we can help the Earth survive by starting with our own community. We’ve known about recycling for many years.  We learn it in school and we read about it in books and magazines.  Some of us recycle bottles and cans, but do we really know why? Why is it important to recycle? Who wants to live in a world full of trash? Imagine how earth would look if we didn’t recycle. It’s time to do our part in helping Earth survive.  We need to answer these questions before it’s too late.

Recycling is the process of using waste materials and making it into new materials.  This process has been around for many years, but not everyone understands the importance of it.  It is important for the preservation and the protection of our environment. There is so much garbage that it puts a lot of pressure on landfills.  As population grows, so do our waste materials.

The graph shows the percentage of the waste materials in our landfills. The percentage of recyclables not being recycled is more than half of the waste materials in the landfill. We need to find ways to help reduce this percentage or else our Earth will just be one big landfill.

There are three essential parts to the recycling process in order for it to be successful; collection, manufacturing, and buying.  Each community has different ways of collecting and sorting waste materials. There are recycling bins and recycling centers available for people to use.  They are clearly marked with the recycling logo of three arrows in a triangular shape.

Once the waste materials are sorted, it then has to be manufactured into materials that companies can use to make their products.  It’s an expensive process in making recycled materials into a reusable product, but the results can make a big difference to the environment.  The last part of this process is buying the product. We all need to help out by buying products that come from recycled materials. This is important for the whole recycling process to be successful.

Earth needs our help to survive and we need Earth to keep alive.  You wouldn’t want to live with garbage all around you, but if we don’t do our part then eventually our Earth will die.

It is not too late to save the Earth from looking like this.  We can start by recycling the garbage we have in our homes and supporting manufacturers who use recycled materials.  Let’s keep Earth green and recycle!
